These days, face masks are more of a necessity than ever when it comes to preventing the spread of viruses and disease. Though over the recent months, they’ve transformed into a bit of a stylish accessory, with various designs now entering the marketplace.

Rather than settling for a flimsy, single-use face mask, it may be worth upgrading to a reusable piece. Not only are they better for the environment and give you more bang for your buck, but they’re also typically much more fashionable - and are therefore much easier to match with your outfit.

Are you wondering how to match a stylish face mask with your outfit? Check out these 4 tips below to get you started.

Benefits Of Reusable Face Masks

Environmentally Friendly. Single-use or disposable face masks are an issue when it comes to their environmental impact. Reusable face-masks are a much greener option - particularly because they can be washed and worn time and time again.

Economical. Not only are reusable face masks better for the environment, bet they’re a much more economical option. Rather than purchasing more and more packets of disposable face masks, you can buy one or two reusable pieces to last the long term.

Stylish. Reusable face masks tend to be much more fashionable than their disposable counterparts. Because of their stiffer fabric, they have a much more appealing fit. Plus, these fabrics usually come in an assortment of colours and patterns, which you can use to style with your outfit - whether you’re in a social or professional setting.

How To Match Stylish Face Masks With An Outfit

  • Solid-Colours
  • When it comes to matching a face mask with your outfit, solid-colours are always a safe bet - particularly if you’re wearing patterned-clothes regularly. For example, solid colours, like black or navy, won’t clash with other aspects of your outfit - making them a seamless, yet fashionable option.

Are you on the hunt for a stylish face mask? Check out these 4-Layered Cotton Face Masks from us here at Style Standard. With a 3D-shape, adjustable ear-loops and nose bridge, and up to 6 different colours to choose from, they’re perfect for any occasion - whether it’s for the office, date night, or every-day use.

These outfits have a nice contrast between the colors in the clothes and the solid masks. A patterned mask would be competing against the guy's already complex suit while the light grey in the lady's mask goes along with her already conservative outfit.

  • Use Complementary Colours
  • What if you’re tired of the basic white or black face masks? Switch things up with a fresh colour - like dark blue or green. Keep in mind, the colour that you choose needs to compliment the other aspects of your outfit, rather than clash with it. So, before choosing a random colour, review the colour wheel for the best results.

With this tool, you can create a colour scheme for your outfit and find a face mask to best suit your ensemble.

  • Watch Out For Patterns
  • A bold-patterned face mask can be a great way of showcasing your personality while taking your outfit to the next level - but only when it’s done right.

If you’d like to switch it up with some fresh patterns, try toning down or simplifying your outfit to give your face mask room to flourish. Though be weary of designs clashing throughout your outfit.

That being said, loud, patterned face-masks may not be appropriate in a professional setting, so it might be best to leave them for the social events. At work, let your solid-coloured masks take the main stage.

  • Thicker Fabrics
  • Lastly, let’s consider the fabric of your facial mask. Getting the colour or pattern right is only half the battle - if the material looks sloppy or fits uncomfortably, it can impact the visual appeal.

Avoid fabrics that don’t suit the busy, on-the-go lifestyle - like silk. It typically won’t mix well with sweat or the moisture produced from your breath. Instead, opt for a stiffer, sturdier fabric like cotton. It’ll maintain its shape and look much more presentable than the flimsy alternative.

This image is a great example of two different concepts. First, the tonal interaction here between the dark hair, low contrast hair to skin tones, and dark fabrics creates a strong and striking appearance. Second, the texture of the face mask compliments the texture of the model's hair, introducing a really great contrast against the smoothness of their skin and shirt.

How To Wear A Face Mask

No matter how stylish your face mask looks, the guidelines for wearing them stay the same. Though if you’re unsure how to wear your face mask, here’s a quick 4-step guide for wearing it properly and safely.

  • Wash Your Hands. It’s always best to start the process off with clean hands. Before touching the mask, cleanse your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitiser.
  • Secure The Mask Over Your Ears. Make sure the mask covers your nose and mouth. Adjust the flexible band to fit the ridge of your nose for a snug fit. If possible, adjust the ear-loops to make the mask more comfortable.
  • Don’t Touch The Mask. While you’re wearing the face mask, you should avoid touching it to prevent any contamination. If you do accidentally touch it, be sure to wash your hands. The same applies when removing the face mask - instead, use the ties on either side.
  • Wash The Mask. Reusable face masks need to be washed before they’re used again. Clean the mask under hot water with a mild detergent after each use. Scrub the fabric gently and leave to dry overnight.
